Montebello After-School Students Share Music With Seniors
Montebello, CA – March 2013 –Students enrolled in the Creative Brain® Afterschool program, in partnership with Montebello U.S.D/E.L.O Program at Washington Elementary and Montebello Gardens Elementary Schools will share their musical talents by providing Group Music facilitation at the local senior centers.
Under the guidance of Creative Brain® band teacher Albert Picon and violin teacher Vanessa Sanchez, students from Washington Elementary will be visiting the Golden Manor Retirement Center on March 15, 2013. Students from MGE, under the leadership of guitar teacher Aaron Perez and Piano teacher Lisabeth Garcia, will provide group music facilitation at the Rio Hondo Nursing Center on March 14, 2013.
Creative Brain’s group music facilitation activity is part of the program’s commitment to student service learning. Students do not only have an opportunity to go out to the community and share what they have learned, but in the process gather valuable skills as well.
Laura Garcia, Quality Assurance Supervisor for Creative Brain® Learning, comments that, students will not only share the joy of music with the seniors, but will facilitate active music participation by distributing instruments to attendees and helping them join in the activity. Research shows that actively making music can help lower blood pressure, reduce stress and depression, and contribute to a healthier and longer life.
As Danny Escobar, Site Coordinator at the Washington Elementary ELO/Creative Brain after-school program, says, Students are excited to share their music not only for the joy and art of it, but also for the “health of it!”
